Following Trump’s FBI raid on Fulton County’s elections center, Brad Raffensperger – Georgia’s top elections official – has remained completely silent, afraid to contradict the president in what has quickly become an all-out Trump loyalty test within the Republican gubernatorial primary.
The AJC took notice, saying: “Notably, Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger — who oversees elections — didn’t immediately comment.” And this comes as Raffensperger’s GOP rival Burt Jones strongly defended the raid and brutally attacked his opponents, hammering Raffensperger for not “fix[ing] the corruption” and Carr for not “prosecut[ing] it.”
“There’s no excuse for Brad Raffensperger burying his head in the sand as Trump raids our election centers and wields federal law enforcement as a weapon in his personal revenge campaign,” said Jake Strickland, communications advisor to the Georgia Democratic Party. “We deserve a governor who will stand up against these brazen abuses, and Raffensperger has shown that he would rather hide from the voters than stand up for our state.”
This has quickly become a fast-accelerating race to the right, and Trump’s “long-held, but unproven” 2020 election conspiracies have become a flashpoint within the GOP primary. Jones and his MAGA allies are intensifying their attacks on Raffensperger, recently hijacking legislative
session to hammer Raffenperger’s record as Secretary of State and publishing an op-ed in The Federalist accusing him of “gaslighting” the people of Georgia.
