How to Register for the Upcoming Election

In order to vote in this Fall’s General Election on November 4th, you must be registered where you live by Monday, October 6th. This means if you have never voted in Georgia, you need to register by this date; if you’ve moved to a new address in Georgia since the last time you voted, you need to update your registration, especially if you’ve moved to a different county. (See Check Your Registration for additional info on updating your registration.)

Registering to vote is easy and free. You simply complete a registration form and show proof of who you are and where you live.

There are three ways to register. Pick the way that is easiest for you.

To register online, you must have a Georgia state driver’s license or another state ID card issued by Georgia’s Department of Driver Services (DDS) with your signature on file. If you do not have a DDS-issued ID, you can register by mail or in-person instead.

Check online in a couple of weeks to ensure your registration has been processed – you can follow the instructions in
Check Your Registration or call or text the Voter Protection Hotline at 888-730-5816.

This option may require access to a printer – if you don’t have a printer, ask a friend or neighbor if they can help or try your local library.

Register to vote by mail by taking the following easy steps:

  • Get a registration application by printing one, going to your County Elections Office, or getting an application at a Post Office or public library.
  • Complete and sign the application and mail it to your County Elections Office. Don’t forget postage! Click here to find your county elections office.
    • If you are registering to vote in GA for the first time: Include a copy of your photo ID and proof of residence, like a utility bill or a copy of your lease. (If you don’t have a copy hand, bring one with you the first time you go to vote.)

Check online in a couple of weeks to make sure the submission worked. To do that follow the instructions in
Check Your Registration or call or text the Voter Protection Hotline at 888-730-5816.

You can register in-person at your County Elections Office or when you apply for or renew your Georgia driver’s license:

  • Find your county elections office online. Go to the office and tell them you want to register to vote. They will lead you through what you need to do.
  • You can also register to vote when you renew your driver’s license or change information on your license by going to the driver’s license bureau. Unless you opt out, the information you provide for your driver’s license will be used to initiate or update your voter registration.

Check Your Registration

In order to vote, you must be registered where you live. Check to make sure that your registration is accurate and up to date!

On a web browser or mobile device, visit Georgia’s MVP website. Input your name, county, and date of birth. When MVP loads, confirm your registration is up to date and accurate!

If your information is inaccurate or out of date, you’ll need to update it before October 6th. (If it’s after the registration deadline and you’ve discovered an issue with your registration, you can call your County Elections Office to find out whether and where you can vote.)

If you have a Georgia state driver’s license or voter ID, you can make changes directly in MVP:

  1. In the box titled “Personal Information,” scroll down and click the “Update Voter Information” button.
  2. On the next page, click “Edit” in the top right corner of the box titled “Personal Information.” Correct the information you need to.
  3. Scroll down to the “For Verification” section and enter your Georgia driver’s license number or voter ID number and enter your date of birth. Click “Continue.”
  4. On the final “Submit” page, verify that all of the information listed is true and accurate. If everything is correct, click “Submit.”

If you don’t have an ID issued by Georgia DDS, you’ll need to re-register by mail or in person – follow the instructions in
How to Register or call or text the Voter Protection Hotline at 888-730-5816 for personalized suggestions.

Frequently Asked Questions

Please call or text the Voter Protection Hotline at 888-730-5816. We can’t register you to vote, but it is easy for us to check your registration for you and to provide suggestions for what you need to do to register or update your information.

If you’ve moved or lived in multiple locations in Georgia, try your past counties when logging in. Also check any common misspellings of your name – when data is entered into the system, sometimes errors are made (especially if your name is hyphenated).

If this works for logging into MVP but you find an error in your registration, like an old address, wrong county, or misspelled name, it should be corrected. You may be able to make simple changes (like correcting a typo) by calling your county elections office; for other issues, you’ll need to update your registration using the method shown in Check Your Registration.

Having trouble finding yourself at all in MVP or updating your information? Call or text the Voter Protection Hotline at 888-730-5816 for suggestions.

If the registration has an error (for example, a misspelling of your name), call your county registrar to correct it. Click here to find your county elections office.

If the registration does not reflect your current address, then you will need to update your registration! Follow the instructions in Check Your Registration to submit changes directly in MVP.

Call your county registrar to see if they are able to locate your registration. Click here to find your county elections office’s contact information. If they say you’re not registered, you’ll need to re-register – follow the instructions in How to Register to register online, by mail, or in-person.
