The GOP primary for governor has long been messy – and now, Trump-endorsed Burt Jones and his allies are actively working to thwart the candidacy of his Republican rival Rick Jackson in the latest show of just how chaotic this race has become.
The AJC reported on Monday that Jones ally Rep. Jason Ridley is leading legislation with a “not-so-subtle focus” on disqualifying Jackson from running for governor.
Jackson’s campaign shot back in yet another round of GOP infighting that has come to define this messy and chaotic primary, dismissing the action as “political maneuvering” and highlighting Jones’ long record of self-enrichment: “It’s a little surprising that a state representative who endorsed Burt is targeting his self-dealing […] Would Burt have to resign immediately?”
Jones and allies have long used the levers of power to go after his GOP opponents and prop up his gubernatorial campaign. In January, Jones and his allies hijacked legislative session by introducing a resolution to go after Brad Raffensperger for his record as Secretary of State, and earlier this month Jones went even further after both Carr and Raffensperger, taking a “sharp swipe” at his GOP opponents for skipping a pair of legislative hearings.
