Equality reaches the Supreme Court

This week, the road towards LGBT Equality reaches the US Supreme Court. Tomorrow, Tuesday March 26, the Court will hear oral arguments regarding the constitutionality of California’s Prop 8. On Wednesday, March 27, the Court hears arguments on the constitutionality of DOMA (Defense of Marriage Act). Regardless of the outcome, these two days will be forever marked as history in the LGBT journey towards full and absolute equality.

The Georgia Democrats LGBT Caucus encourages you to participate this week in local events marking this time in history.

Tonight, Monday March 25, a rally will be held at the Georgia State Capitol starting at 7:30 PM. The rally, Light The Way To Justice, is part of a series of over 200 rallies that will be held across the country today. The Georgia rally is sponsored in part by Atlanta Pride, Gentle Spirit Christian Church, St. Marks Methodist Church, Gender Benders, and Marriage Equality USA. You can find out more information on the rally on their Facebook event page: Light The Way To Justice rally.

At 6:30 PM Wednesday evening at the Phillip Rush Center, Georgia Equality and Lambda Legal will be teaming up to present a Townhall Meeting to discuss the two days of court proceedings. Lambda Legal lawyers will be reviewing the oral arguments presented and possible outcomes on both cases. Further details on this event can be found at the Georgia Equality website: Georgia Equality. Please RSVP via the website to insure seating is available to accommodate all attendees. PLEASE NOTE FOR THOSE LIVING OUTSIDE OF ATLANTA: This townhall will also be available live via webstream. The link is on the GE webpage.

On both days of the oral arguments, the US Supreme Court has agreed to release transcripts and audio tapes of the proceedings approximately two hours after they conclude. These will be available on the US Supreme Court website: US Supreme Court.
