Longtime local Democrat Mike Freeman told a room full of supporters that as a former Episcopal minister and Naval Reserve chaplain he has learned how to get along.

“I can work with anybody, any kind of person in any situation, I promise you,” Freeman said.

Freeman was introduced by Mayor Ruth Bruner, and added he could deal with philosophies as varied as speaker Nancy Pelosi to Congressman Nathan Deal.

Freeman praised President Barack Obama’s efforts to manage tough administration challenges including health care, the economy and national security.

“Let’s remember the Obama administration has been in office just over a year and they came up with some incredibly difficult problems to address and I believe they’ve addressed them in the best possible way,” Freeman said. “Given the alternatives, I think we’re much better off than we were.”

Freeman pledged to listen, learn and represent his constituents, tell what he believes to be the truth and accept the political challenge of campaigning in a region that for several years has been dominated by Republicans.

“I am going to work around that by speaking honestly and openly to people,” Freeman said. “My preference is to work individually or in small groups, but I will go anywhere anytime and talk to people. I want them to understand who I am, if they can’t vote for me knowing who I am and what I believe then I don’t want their vote, but I don’t want them not to vote for me simply because of the Democratic label.”

Freeman blamed Congressional Republicans for America’s financial problems. He said those problems were highlighted by bank failures, local government program cuts, and banks unwilling to make credit available after benefiting from federal bailout funds.

"These problems are going to take a lot of time and effort to repair, Freeman told his audience, "partly because Republicans are more interested in making President Obama and the Democrats appear incompetent rather than joining with them to find solutions."
