Georgia Democrats Host Press Call Holding Trump Accountable for Supporting Georgia’s Extreme Abortion Ban

April 9, 2024

Today, ahead of Trump fundraising with his billionaire friends in Atlanta tomorrow, Georgia Democrats hosted a press call to hold Donald Trump accountable for Georgia’s extreme abortion ban and all other abortion bans across the country, including those without exceptions for rape, incest or the life of the mother. DPG Chair Congresswoman Nikema Williams was joined on the call by State Representative Shea Roberts and Dr. Shawana Moore, a Georgia nurse practitioner and former president of the National Association of Nurse Practitioners in Women’s Health.

In a video yesterday, Donald Trump bragged about being “proudly the person responsible” for extreme state abortion bans like Georgia’s – which bans abortions before many women know they’re pregnant. He also made clear he supports restrictions on interstate travel, the criminalization of doctors, and restrictions on contraception. Trump also offered no national protections for IVF, and he has previously refused to say if he’ll sign a bill protecting that or other fertility treatments. If Donald Trump is elected, and the MAGA Republicans in Congress put a national abortion ban on the Resolute Desk, there is no question Trump will sign it into law.

“As Trump said yesterday, he is “proudly the person responsible” for this extreme abortion ban – and he’s not done attacking our reproductive freedom. So let’s talk about what exactly Trump is proudly taking credit for. He’s taking credit for women being forced to carry out medically dangerous pregnancies or wait until a complication puts them at death’s door before being able to get life-saving medical care. He’s taking credit for Georgians having to flee our state and travel hundreds of miles to get life saving care. He’s taking credit for doctors facing confusion and fear of prosecution when just trying to do their jobs,” said Congresswoman Nikema Williams, Chair of the Democratic Party of Georgia. “The reality we’re seeing in Georgia is a stark reminder of why we need President Biden and Vice President Harris in the White House. We know they’ll stand with the vast majority of Americans who support the right to choose, and that if given a Democratic Congress, they will restore the protections of Roe in federal law once and for all.”

“Trump’s abortion ban makes the delivery room even more dangerous for Black women and threatens our lives,” Chair Williams continued. “And Trump has the audacity to come to Atlanta tomorrow to fundraise with his billionaire friends while women across the state suffer because of his policies.”

“When Roe fell, I watched our state’s Republican leadership rush to implement the ban that my GOP counterparts put on Governor Kemp’s desk in 2019 – something they have been planning and hoping to do for years. And just like that, millions of Georgia women no longer had control over their own bodies and health care decisions. Yesterday, Trump bragged about this, saying “I was proudly the person responsible” for ending Roe,” said State Rep. Shea Roberts. “Extreme Republicans at every level of government – from the state legislature to Congress – have shown us time and again that they will go to any length to restrict our bodily autonomy. And Trump has proven himself ready and eager to be their ringleader in that shameful mission. Georgia Democrats will continue fighting tooth and nail to make sure that our daughters don’t have to live in a world where they have fewer rights than we did. But we need allies in the White House who will help us. We need President Biden and Vice President Harris, who will always defend reproductive freedom and will keep fighting to make the protections of Roe the law of the land.”

“As a healthcare provider, I have witnessed firsthand the profound impact that Georgia’s extreme abortion ban  has had on the lives of patients I serve, and particularly Black women. There is no denying that changes to Georgia law, including the new six week abortion ban – inspired by Donald Trump as well as MAGA extremists – prevent me from providing the best care possible to the patients I serve,” said Dr. Shawana Moore, a nurse practitioner, former president of the National Association of Nurse Practitioners in Women’s Health, and professor at Emory University. “With that being said, it’s really distressing to hear the recent statements yesterday morning that celebrated the overturning of Roe v. Wade, which is really crucial to reproductive access and rights. Having seen the pain and suffering from the patients that I care for, I can’t imagine anyone truly celebrating it or celebrating any restrictions that are being placed within access to abortion care. There couldn’t be more of a difference between Donald Trump and his MAGA extremists’ casual cruelty and disregard for the experiences of women and the efforts of President Biden and Vice President Harris in championing reproductive health care access. I truly stand in solidarity with President Biden and Vice President Harris in their efforts to fully restore reproductive freedom for Georgians and people across the country.”
